Superformance Ammunition

September 22nd, 2010 1

If you’re going to brand something “superformance,” the product better possess superior performance across all platforms of competitive measurement, and Superformance Ammunition from Hornady does just that.

Using a revolutionary propellant, the ammunition line is 100 to 200 fps faster than any conventional ammunition on the market today and “achieves this feat in any gun without increases in felt recoil, muzzle blast, temperature sensitivity, fouling or loss of accuracy.” The load uses a SST or GMX bullet and powders at normal charge weights. A wide variety of your favorite calibers are available. (price listed is MSRP for 95-grain SSTs).

I tried the new Superformance cartridges when they came out last year. In the past I had always used Federal trophy bonded bear claws and then switched to the trophy bonded tips which were more accurate and very reliable. The new Superformance ammo, however, is remarkable. Sighted dead at 200 yards with my 300 Win Mag using 180 grain bullets, the drop at 300 yards is about 9 inches using the trophy bonded tips. The drop with the Superformance is about half that. These cartridges shoot very flat. They do expand faster and, while the base of the SST bullets stay in tact, there is not much left. They make a big wound channel. I try and place my shot through the lungs and avoid the shoulder with these loads. This year my son and I each killed an elk in Wyoming with them with one shot at over 300 yards. I have also taken a large mule deer, a pronghorn, and a couple of big whitetails using this ammunition. I would highly recommend it for longer range flat shots in the West. And there is no noticable increase in the recoil. I have also used them in a 25-06 with 120 grain bullets at 400 yards on the range … very flat and great accuracy. I highly recommend that you try them.
