First Buck For Texas Youth, Trey Fuller

My name is Gregg Fuller, and we live in Fort Worth, TX. This was the first season for my eight-year-old grandson, Trey, to hunt.

After one "buck fever" episode, this 3 1/2 year old eight point came walking in. Before he had time to get a case of the nerves, we got him onto the buck.

At about 80 yards, the buck stopped and started looking very nervous. I asked Trey if he was on him, and he said "yes."

Somewhere between "take" and "him", the .223 barked and the buck crumpled in his

tracks!

Trey turned to look at me as both of his eyes began to well up with tears. I asked if he was OK, and he just said "I am so happy!"

He will hopefully take much bigger racked deer in his future, but I don't think he'll ever forget his first shot at an animal.

We did the Texas tradition of painting one cheek with deer blood and went to town for lunch in the tiny town of Bryson 5 miles to our north. Everyone made a point of noticing the face paint, and Trey was happier than a pig in a peach orchard.

Sometimes, with a lot of training and luck, dreams can still come true.
