Groundbreaking Tools 2009
By Monte Burch
Food plot groundbreaking tools are also available from a number of companies and sources, including Cabela’s and Bass Pro. Hunter’s Specialties Terrain Tough tools include a disc/cultipacker and an eight-blade disc harrow. The disc/cultipacker combines a heavy-duty soil tiller with the ground-smoothing capability of a cultipacker. The tilling disc has eight 16-inch blades adjustable from 0 to 20 inches, plus a 48-inch cutting width. The full weight is 711 pounds. The Terrain Tough ATV disc harrow features 16-inch scalloped blades and a 48-inch cutting width. Visit www.hunterspecialties.com.
Tufline has a full line of tillage tools, including ATV discs, designed to work with the larger 4-wheelers. Two models are available, including one for 300cc to 400cc models and one for 500cc ATVs. Both feature adjustable gang cutting angles, a unique depth control system, and 16-inch notched blades. One of the more economical tools is the Tufline flip-disc, which works well with smaller ATVs. Merely pull it to the site and then flip it over to use.
The most unusual groundbreaking tool, however, is the Tufline GroundHog Disc Plow. Weighing only 45 pounds, it can be transported in the bed of your truck. When it’s attached to an ATV, the weight of the ATV and rider gives the plow its cutting power. Visit www.tufline.com.
The Groundbuster Soil Preparation implement, from D&D Food Plot Enterprises Inc., has two sets (front and rear) of heavy-duty 18-inch disc blades that are easily adjustable. The unit comes with a grading mat and heavy-duty compact roller. Also available from the company is the Pulverized Lime Spreader. The spreader holds and spreads up to one ton of lime, whether it’s damp or dry. Visit www.b-i-henterprises.com.
From Kunz Engineering Inc. comes Till-Ease tillage equipment. This includes the Till-Ease Model 543 chisel plow/field cultivator, which cuts up to 6 inches deep and has a cutting width of 43 inches. It has weight racks so you can add weight for tilling hard ground. A separate cultipacker is also available from the company and features 21 individual agricultural quality packer wheels made of cast iron. It flips over for easy transport. Visit www.kunzeng.com.
I’ve been testing and using the Plotmaster products since they were first introduced. These high-quality one-piece, one-pass implements will do it all, from tilling to seeding to covering and cultipacking. The revolutionary one-pass planting process saves an enormous amount of time, money and effort in planting food plots. The Plotmaster implement plows compacted soil. It discs debris and cultivates the soil. And finally, the seedbed leveler levels and prepares a smooth, firm seedbed. The VERSA Seeder blends and uniformly disperses seeds and seed blends, and the cultipacker covers and packs for good soil/seed contact.
Many deer managers are learning that the Native Warm Season Grasses seed blend can be an invaluable part of a deer habitat management program. But the fluffy seed is extremely hard to plant. The Plotmaster new Frontier model is now available with Native Warm Season Grass Kits. The Versa Seeding System features a reverse-auger brush that will dispense and plant virtually all types of seed, including NWSGs and other hard-to-plant seed blends. A seed curtain with attachment brackets eliminates fluffy grass seed from blowing outside the desired planting zone. Visit www.theplotmaster.com.
Probably the most interesting of the groundbreaking implements are the Kolpin Dirt Works 3-point hitch implements, available from Bass Pro. The implements begin with a 3-point hitch tool bar that is mounted to the ATV. Individual tools are then attached to the 3-point hitch. The 3-point hitch fits any 2-inch auto-style receiver hitch and, using a 12V actuator, has a 15-inch vertical lift at the drawbar.
You must purchase a separate receiver hitch accessory to fit your particular ATV whether independent rear suspension or swing-arm models. Any number of plow, disc, cultivator and box blade accessories are available for attachment to the 3-point hitch. Visit www.kolpinpowersports.com.
