Trophy Photos From Our Readers -- April 2008
Armand Archibald Jr., New Hampshire
After getting fresh snow all day long on on Nov. 20, 2007, Armand Archibald Jr. of Enfield, New Hampshire, knew he had to get to the woods. The next day he got off work at 4 a.m. and headed out to do some serious snow tracking.
"After work I flew home, showered and headed to a large tract of public land to try and find a mature buck to track," Armand said "Arriving at one of my favorite spots in Sullivan County, I headed into a clear cut and within 200 yards cut a big track headed into a hemlock thicket. So from there it began.
I followed the track though the nasty thicket for about 400 yards until I
found where he had crossed the main road. I crossed the road and followed him into a swamp where I proceeded to fall into a creek that was waist-deep.
Determined to get this deer, I kept going. I followed the track through two more cuts and over another ridge for three miles.
"Finally he slowed down to feed. Up until this time he had not stopped one time, so now I started sneaking along his track. I got 3/4 up the ridge and a deer busted out. It was a big doe. My heart was racing. I snuck up to where I saw her run out, still following his track. When I got to her track I looked up and there was this beautiful buck coming right toward me with his nose on the ground, grunting. I instantly threw the scope covers open and raised the gun. His head came up and looked at me but it was too late. The Browning 300 WSM roared and he dropped.
"I was shocked at the mass when I saw his horns sticking out of the snow. I got on my cell and started texting all my buddies, telling them that I just shot a beauty (by New Hampshire standards). I found out that two of my other friends had shot good bucks that morning as well. What a great day. Then I checked the GPS and realized I had to drag this 191 pound dressed buck 2.1 miles. I can honestly tell you it was well worth it!"
