Kelli Corbin, North Carolina

Deer of the Day For 29-year-old Kelli Corbin of Baldwin, Florida, the 2007 will always be special. On Sept 10 Kelli went on her first bowhunt ever to North Carolina with her husband Ron. "That morning I saw nothing, but I was excited over the deer sign at my stand," Kelli said. "I definitely wanted to return to the same stand that afternoon.

I got up in the stand around 4:30 p.m. and immediately had 10 deer in front of me ranging from fawns to spikes. They fed all afternoon. I kept hearing this loud grunting noise behind me. Since I'm new to this, I was trying to figure out exactly what the noise was. I sat there as still as possible, having decided not to take a doe and to wait to see if there was a big boy out there.

Well, about 7:30 p.m., he stepped out at 15 yards! My heart, I thought, was down in my feet, but I was still breathing. I drew back my bow and remembered to lock in on my anchor points from my many months of practice. I took a deep breath and gently squeezed my release. The arrow hit it's mark getting both lungs. He ran through the soybean field and veered right. I hoot-owled for my husband and his friend.

They hoot-owled back. I did it again and they knew something was up. When they arrived I was in shock. I showed them where I believed he entered the wood line. Flashlight in hand, my husband shined over near a log and there he was! I couldn't believe it. I shot him with my Bear Element bow, a gold tip arrow and a Grim Reaper broadhead. He ran approximately 60 yards and that's where we found him. He had 10 points. He dressed at 185 pounds and he green-scored 132 3/8. I can honestly say this is a buck of a lifetime and I am hooked on whitetail hunting!
