Lisa Kubicki, Minnesota

Deer of the Day Avid Minnesota deer hunter Ed Kubicki, who hunts in Chisago County, writes that his wife Lisa couldn't wait for the combine to come and cut the corn on the property they hunt together. "While she waited, I continued to hunt," Ed said. "Finally on Friday, Nov. 9, 2007, I had a chance at a well-built 8-pointer. I waited for a good shot and squeezed. At 165 yards, with a shotgun, I was proud. As I came into the house she knew I had killed something by the smile I sported. She was bummed. 'I've spent my time in the wind, rain, snow, and still have not had the chance at something big,' she told me. 'Where is that darned combine?'

"The next day, Saturday, at 3 p.m., the combine arrived. Lisa was out the door in a flash. She saw a couple of does come out of the corn. Next a buck followed. It had 4 points on one side but the other side was missing. As Lisa repositioned to watch the cornfield edge, she noticed something out of the corner of her eye.

Suddenly, a large 10-point buck stood up out of the grass 40-feet in front of her. Apparently he'd been bedded down by her stand the whole time she was there. The irony was that, yes, deer were coming out of the corn, but this buck was never in the corn! Lisa is so overjoyed that I think she's going to need surgery to remove that smile!"
