Paul Scott, Iowa
For bowhunter Paul Scott of Iowa, Oct. 26, 2006, started off rainy and cold. Nonetheless Paul went to his stand at around 2 p.m. All was quiet for the next two hours. Then Paul caught movement out in the field he was watching. Several hundred yards away he saw two does being followed by this big guy.
The does followed the contour of the field and jumped a fence about 45 yards from Paul's position. But the buck went into a small woodlot some 80 yards away and disappeared. Hearing what he thought might be two bucks sparring, Paul did some light rattling for 20 to 30 seconds.
About a minute later, he saw this same buck come to the edge of the field and start working a scrape. The buck grunted one time. Taking the cue, Paul grabbed his grunt tube and grunted twice. The buck lifted his head and started walking right to Paul's position, ultimately offering the hunter a 25 yard shot.
"I wasn't sure of the shot so I let him lay overnight," Paul said. "I found him right away the next morning. He is a main-frame 5x5 with 2 perfect 6-inch matching hooks off his brow tines. Hence I named him Hooks. He grossed 169 typical P&Y points!"
