Bruce Beaulieu of Liberty, Missouri had not been able to hunt for several years, so when he got the opportunity to hunt with friends in Caldwell County last year he was very excited. The date was Nov. 10. It was opening morning of the 2005 gun season in Missouri. Bruce reached his stand about 5:30 a.m. After daylight arrived, Bruce heard the first shot of the morning in the distance. Shortly after the shot several does came over a fence behind his position.
Bruce thought he was in good shape, but suddenly one of the does saw him and blew. Deer went everywhere. Discouraged, Bruse went back to the cabin where he was staying. About 10 a.m., he decided to go back out and sit on the ground. By now it was misting rain. After sitting awhile, he decided to stand up and stretch. Just then he noticed movement.
It was a deer! Bruce got the deer in his scope and realized that it was a nice buck. As soon as the buck stepped into the open, Bruce aimed his Savage .270 and squeezed the trigger. He and a friend later followed a very distinct blood trail. At the end of the short blood trail lay his prize, a chocolate-racked 10-pointer. "What a morning!" Bruce said. "My first buck in six years and my first real trophy! The excitement was like nothing I had felt in a very long time!"
