Mark Doering, Texas

Deer of the Day In late October 2005 Mark Doering of Dallas, Texas went to northeast Wisconsin to hunt with outfitter Gary Nelson of Wild Rivers Whitetails. On the drive from the Greenbay airport, Gary told Mark about an unusual buck he had seen late in the summer that had what appeared to be a third beam coming off its left burr.

Mark was excited about the potential of seeing such a buck. The rut had just started heating up and some mature bucks were being sighted during daylight hours. On the evening of the third day of a four-day hunt, at 5 p.m. just as the sun was beginning to set, Mark and Gary heard a buck grunting and soon saw a doe running up the hill toward their 15-foot ladder stand. The unusual buck Gary had seen in the summer suddenly appeared right behind the doe grunting with each step.

As Mark reached for his Matthews Switchback bow, the doe saw him and started stomping the ground. Fortunately the doe did not bolt and the buck circled downwind, stopping only 20 yards from the stand. Mark made a perfect shot and the 260-pound bruiser fell within plain view of the two hunters some 40 yards away. With a 25-inch spread and a total of 15 points (including those on the third beam), Mark's non-typical trophy grossed 186 inches!
