Kyle Holt, Colorado
The night before the 2005 Kansas rifle season opened, the temperature dropped into the teens. So the next morning, instead of going to his tree stand that was located in some heavy timber on the edge of a milo field, Kyle Holt of New Castle, Colorado decided to sneak in and hunt on the ground near a small field of standing corn.
Kyle had hunted this area for the past five seasons with his cousin who lives nearby.
"We had tagged some nice bucks in years past, but never the monster I had always dreamed of," Kyle said. At about 6:45 a.m., Kyle heard a bedded deer that in the corn get up and start feeding. It was still too dark to tell whether it was a buck or a doe.
"The deer moved slowly through the corn near the edge of the field," Kyle said.
"There was no wind and I could hear him crunching corn. Just after shooting light at about 7:10, I saw the sides of his antlers and I knew he was a shooter. He was barely 40 yards away and one shot with my Remington .270 dropped him in his tracks. As I walked up to him I had no idea he would be the monster I had always dreamed about. He was the buck of a lifetime! He had a perfect 6x6 rack and he weighed over 260 pounds. His official gross score was 181 and he netted 176 4/8 typical B&C points!"
