Trophy Photos From Our Readers -- March 2007

Danny Wahl, Illinois

Deer of the Day On November 3, 2006, avid whitetail hunter Danny Wahl was hunting in southwestern Illinois in a stand that he refers to as his "honey hole" because in the last five years he has taken three bucks from this location. During the last hour of daylight, 3 does came walking out of a bedding area. A few minutes later they were followed by a buck. Being unable to get a good look at the buck, Danny thought it might be the same young 10-pointer he had seen a few days earlier. After watching the buck trail the does almost completely out of sight he decided to try using a call.

"I grunted and doe bleated but had no luck at all," Danny said. "Then I thought about the new call I bought that I was dying to try. It was a new Primos Buck Roar. I let out a roar and he stopped! I followed it with a snort wheeze and he looked my way! I knew it would be almost impossible for him to leave the 3 does but that is just what he did and he started my way."

It took quite a while for the buck to get within bow range as Danny called several more times. Finally the buck got close enough to offer a shot. Using a Mathews Q-2 bow, Danny released an arrow. After the shot Danny waited a while. Then he climbed down from his tree and took up the trail. When he reached the buck's side he couldn't believe his eyes. Danny's awesome trophy was a main-framed 5x5 with three stickers on each side.

"I was shaking so bad that all the pictures from my digital camera turned out blurred," Danny said. "Did I mention that I always get buck fever? I am sure glad I didn't see his entire rack before I shot! My buck field dressed at 205 pounds and scored 164 4/8 P&Y points gross! As owner and operator of "Take This Job and Stuff It Taxidermy," I knew right away that I was going to do a life-size mount on this deer! I took great care in field dressing him and getting him out of the woods! I've taken 41 Whitetails with a bow and I took my first with a rifle last year in Wyoming!"
