James Soltys of Edmonton, Alberta teamed up with his father to do a series of two-man drives in the Canadian bush on the morning of Nov. 9, 2005, when he crossed paths with this brute. "Luckily it was my turn to wait on the point and my dad was pushing toward me," James said. "After 1 1/2 hours of waiting, this monster tried to sneak past me. Crawling with his chin almost touching the ground and his tail down, it was hard to see him in the cover he was trying to sneak through. And, with only a moment to check him out, I just had a second to decide but I'm happy with the choice I made that day."
At a distance of 100 yards, it was a difficult shot at best. But, after one glimpse of those long tines, James knew he had to go for it.Using his Remington Mountain LSS .30-06, he made a perfect shot! With an inside spread of 23 7/8 inches, the wide 10-pointer grossed 185 1/8 and netted 176 7/8 typical B&C points.
"I'm not sure what he weighed, but it was a big job packing him out," James says. "If you ever get the opportunity, come to Alberta, because there are lots of big guys like this one walking around. Thanks, Dad, for the good job pushing!"
