On Nov. 21, 2005, John Alvino of Woodmere, New York found himself perched 25 feet up in a tree in Ground Birch, British Columbia.
Here, John says, successful whitetail hunting is very dependent on cold weather and the rut. It was the fourth day of John’s hunt and, happy but cold, John was huddling in his coat trying to stay warm as temperatures plunged into the single digits. After spotting several does and a small 8-pointer, John noticed that the young buck suddenly became very nervous and started watching its back trail.
Then, with ears down, it slinked off and disappeared. Suddenly a much larger buck with a huge body and a much heavier 10-point rack appeared! Knowing this buck was a shooter, John raised his Weatherby .300 Magnum and dropped the big deer in its tracks. The 300-plus pound giant measured 165 1/8 B&C points.
