T.W. Garrett -- Alberta, Canada
On November 12, 2007, T. W. Garrett of Cleveland, Texas was hunting from a ladder stand on an old logging road near Goodfish Lake, Alberta, Canada. The stand had been placed on a crossing where a beaver pond and a ravine created a funnel. Only 20 minutes had passed since guide Stan Houle had left when a doe nervously crossed the road 75 yards from the stand. Ten minutes later, T. W. heard a faint grunt.
This was followed by a series of grunts and a grunt-snort-wheeze as the monster buck trailed the doe through the bush. The buck finally came into view. T. W. had time for only one quick shot with his Remington .300 Ultra-mag as the deer crossed the narrow logging road. At the shot, the deer fell forward with only his tail showing in the edge of the road.
The snow-covered bush was silent on the 26-degree Fahrenheit morning as T. W. climbed down from his stand and approached the deer. Then the war whoops began which would make any Cree Indian proud. The celebration is still continuing to this day! T. W.'s buck was a 5x5 with 7 1/4-inch bases, brow tines exceeding 9 inches, and a 19-inch inside spread. The Alberta heavy-weight grossed 175 1/8 and netted 167 3/8.
