Garmin's hot new handheld features preloaded topographic maps, 3-D map view, a high-sensitivity receiver, barometric altimeter, electronic compass, micro-SD card slot, picture viewer and more. With similar units (Oregon and Colorado series), users can wirelessly exchange tracks, waypoints, routes and geocaches.
The 3-inch sunlight-readable screen reads in color and operates in touchscreen. To withstand the elements, the Oregon 400t has a rubber-armored waterproof case. The 400t helps the hunter visualize his or her surroundings. It is preloaded with topographic maps, a 3-D map view and a worldwide base map with shaded relief. Detail includes state and local parks and forests with terrain contours, elevation, trails, rivers and lakes.
The high-sensitivity WAAS-enabled GPS receiver and HotFix satellite prediction helps locate position quickly and precisely and maintains its GPS location even in heavy cover and deep canyons. The built-in electronic compass provides bearing information even while standing still, and its barometric altimeter tracks changes in pressure to pinpoint your precise altitude. You can even use the altimeter to plot barometric pressure over time, which can help you keep an eye on changing weather conditions.
Preloaded micro-SD cards are available for all outdoor activities on land or water (see maps tab for compatible maps). Just insert a MapSource card with detailed street maps, and Oregon provides turn-by-turn directions to your destination. Add detailed trail information by purchasing additional TOPO maps. Suggested retail price: $639.99. Call 913-397-8200 or visit www.garmin.com.
