Five Muzzleloaders For The Deer Woods

Five Muzzleloaders For The Deer Woods

There was a time when muzzleloading truly meant hunting with a primitive tool. Not anymore, as today's high-tech models will attest.

It's possible to kill a trophy whitetail with little more than a gun that shoots straight, a decent bullet and a dose of common sense. But why rely on the bare minimum when a world of whitetail gear exists to improve the odds? Read on for the inside details behind some of the hottest hunting muzzleloaders available.

Bad Bull X Series
Bad Bull Muzzleloaders is featuring its X Series line for 2010. This muzzleloader is designed for long range hunting. With the 275-grain ballistic tip bullet, the X Series generates a velocity of 3,100 feet per second and retains 1,300 fps at 500 yards. Two upgrades are available with the X Series. First, by use of the two-stage Mag-Prime Breech Plug System, the X Series can be de-primed without discharging the gun. Second, Bad Bull's new Bolt Primer system allows the primer to be inserted into the breech plug without the use of a primer installing tool. (www.badbullmuzzleloaders.com)

CVA ACCURA V2
CVA upgraded its ACCURA muzzleloader with the new V2 model. The V2 includes all of the features of the initial ACCURA model, along with a few new features. First, the latest model includes a Soft-Touch coating and Rubber Grip Panels to make the gun easier to grip in inclement weather. Both thumbhole and standard stocks are available in black and Realtree APG camo. The ACCURA V2 also features CVA's new Quick Release Breech Plug, which allows the hunter to shoot multiple shots and still remove the breech plug without a tool. The V2 features stainless steel Bergara barrels and a trigger guard actuated breeching action. (www.cva.com)

Savage Arms 10 ML II
Savage Arms' 10 ML-II is available with either synthetic black or camouflage stock and either blued or stainless steel barrel. The .50-caliber single-shot muzzleloader features Savage's AccuTrigger technology and is pre-drilled and tapped for scope mounts, though it is also set up for shooting with open sights. The 10 ML-II is capable of shooting 1 1/2-inch groups at 100 yards and utilizes a 209 primer ignition. The gun can deliver velocities of 2,300 fps with more than 3,000 foot-pounds of knockdown energy. (www.savagearms.com)

Thompson/Center Impact
T/C sent shockwaves through the blackpowder market this year when the quality gunmaker introduced a lower price-point model to go head-to-head with some of the bargain manufacturers. Their offering, the Impact, may come in at a welcome price to shooters, but the gun doesn't cut too many corners in delivering the type of quality folks expect of T/C. The Impact features a sliding hood breech for easy cleaning via access to the removable breech plug, a black or camo composite stock capable of length adjustment, T/C's patented hammer and trigger mechanism and Quick Load Accurizor muzzle system. Traditions Vortek Ultra Light
Designed for performance that exceeds the 200-yard barrier, the Ultra Light features a tapered, fluted ported barrel that helps reduce gun weight to a light 6 1/4 pounds; a drop-out trigger assembly for easy cleaning, a Hogue over-molded buttstock and fore-end for better grip, Tradition's Accelerator breech plug and 209 ignition. The LT-1 alloy frame along with the ported barrel are topped with Williams, metal fiber optic sights, as well as drilled and tapped for scope mounting. Available in Realtree AP camo or matte black finish. (www.traditionsfirearms.com)
