20 Best Whitetail States for 2014

by Mark Kenyon   |  September 3rd, 2014 0

Hunters naturally love rankings: The 10 best bows for the year, the top 20 biggest typical bucks, and the five smelliest new deer urines. No matter the subject, we love stacking things up and seeing how they rank against one another. And of course, this holds true for whitetails and the states they call home.

Ranking the quality of a state as a whitetail hunting destination is an imperfect science, and of course a bit subjective. But our goal with the 2014 rankings was to have a little fun, share some interesting information about each state and provide a tool that can help as you make decisions about where to hunt deer in the future.

20 Best DIY Whitetail States for 2014

No matter where you hunt, killing a big, mature buck is no cake walk.In some states, however, the opportunities are next...

Included in our ranking criteria are a number of factors pertaining to the quality of deer and likelihood of success on a hunt in each state, such as overall harvest numbers, average number of deer killed per hunter, and Pope and Young and Boone & Crockett entries (as a ratio to how many hunters were in each state). We then assigned point values based on a scale of 1-10 to each of these criteria (and more).

Additionally, we looked at cost-related factors, such as the cost of a non-resident license, how much the average outfitted hunts will run you, average lease rates in the region, and how expensive it would be to purchase property of your own. We assigned point values based on a scale of 1-3 for each of these criteria. After adding up all of the points for a total of 85 possible points, the final point tally left us with the rankings you see.

Take a look at our rankings of the 20 best whitetail states for 2014, enjoy, and of course, let the debate begin.
