Dale Hoffman, Michigan

This great 8-pointer didn't wait quite long enough to exit a swamp in northern Michigan's Cheboygan County. On the evening of Nov. 17, 1996, local hunter Dale Hoffman caught the brute stepping out of the swamp edge as legal shooting light was fading. Fortunately, Dale and his .338 Win. Mag. were up to the challenge of the 190-yard shot. Despite being only 3 1/2 years old, the trophy deer dressed out at 215 pounds, and his rack had a 23-inch spread and notable antler mass. He'd apparently spent most of the time in the swamp, Dale notes, because the lower portions of all four legs were stained black. Photo by Ken Rocheleau.
