Family Tradition: Ohio Hunter Joins Brother in State Lore

Once official, Tony Newman's 190-inch Ohio buck will easily find a place in the Buckeye State's record book. He'll join brother Tim, who currently holds the state firearms record for whitetails.

Family Tradition: Ohio Hunter Joins Brother in State Lore
A few years after his brother set the state firearms record for whitetails, Ohio's Tony Newman scored his own Boone and Crockett buck — a 190-inch giant in 2024.

When your brother, and lifetime hunting partner, holds the Ohio state firearms record for whitetail deer, you gain a certain sense of pride. Tony Newman has rightfully told a lot of folks about Tim’s accomplishment, and taking a Boone and Crockett whitetail of his own became their next goal. Even in Ohio this is a daunting task, but they were determined to get it done. Imagine the excitement when they found a candidate in 2024.

It began with a mega buck showing up in cell-cam pictures every night over the summer. With this new discovery, Tim doubled down to help Tony join the elite club.

The back-and-forth calls increased with each new picture as they plotted the pursuit. Then right before the season opened, the buck moved to a new spot. The pair scrambled to locate him again, and the quest moved forward once they were successful in that feat.

"Skyscraper" was a regular on cell-cam pictures throughout the summer months.

The plan was to video the hunt as they experienced it together. However, Hurricane Helene moved in and opening weekend weather was off the charts. The Redneck blind was waiting, but it just wasn’t happening. With the hunt postponed, Tim returned to work on Monday.

Tony carried his crossbow in for an afternoon solo sit on Tuesday and the action came quickly. Three bucks showed up and began sparring.

“I suspected the noise might attract “Skyscraper”, and 40 minutes later he showed up walking like a true boss,” he said. “I took the shot, and called my brother, then waited on him to help with the recovery.”

Tony's buck featured incredibly long tines on both sides, a characteristic that was shared by Tim's buck just years earlier.

After a five-minute search, they located the bolt stuck in a tree. It looked good, so they pressed forward.

Joking, Tim said, “Stop, I think he just jumped!”

Then pointing at the buck he added, “No, just kidding, you killed your Booner!”

The 190-inch rack bears a striking resemblance to Tim's buck with a wall of long tines on each side, despite a 20-mile geographic separation. After the drying period it should easily make the book.

Mission accomplished!
