Ohio Man Successful On Huge 190-inch Typical In Snow

Peter Janson had an encounter with a big deer in a specific area in 2021. When he hunted the area again in November 2022, he capitalized on a different giant.

A close encounter with a double drop tine buck on his father’s Ohio land in 2021 set up Peter Janson to encounter another giant the following season.

“I was making a late afternoon hunt, easing into a good spot, when that buck came in on me fast,” Peter says. “We had a serious stare down, and then he was gone!”

That confrontation was painful, but Peter remembered exactly where he was that day and decided to try the spot again on Nov. 20, 2022. However, this time he brought along his friend, Derrick Randolph. The late part of the rut was still on, and the two hunters slipped quietly into the edge of the woods, just off a cut soybean field late in the day. They were set up between bedding and the food source.

“Deer bed down along the creek there,” Peter says. “And it’s an easy place to make a quick hunt.”

Not long after they got into position, a doe came up the trail. Peter told his buddy that he was going to shoot her, but the deer spooked when he drew his bow and left quickly. Then another doe with two fawns came by, and he let them pass. A few minutes later, they spotted a third doe with a young 6-point pushing her their way. The doe bolted past their position just as Derrick spotted a huge buck joining the chase.

The big deer had slipped into the woods from the field above. “All I heard was, ‘Holy crap, that thing is a monster,’” Peter laughs. “Then the doe doubled back and nearly ran over me!”

The three deer were crashing back into the bottom when Peter threw out a snort-wheeze. It didn’t seem like the giant heard it, but another young 8-point showed up and walked right past the two hunters. There was no denying they were in the action!

“Then we spotted the doe and the big buck heading toward us again,” Peter adds. “She brought him back to 25 yards, and I managed to get an arrow into him that time!”

The giant went right down, but Peter put another arrow in him just to be safe. The huge rack has an impressive 23 6/8-inch inside spread and is very uniform. There are only a few inches of difference on the rack, pushing its score to 190 6/8.
