Step with me into the Whitetail Time Machine , and let’s travel back to the good ole days of deer hunting! Once a week for the remainder of 2024, the North American Whitetail edit staff is excited to publish a new batch of photos submitted by fans and readers of the magazine throughout the 1980s and 90s, all of which we found stowed away in a huge box that’d been tucked in a corner of our office in Kennesaw, Georgia, prior to its closing.
These photos came to us from hunters across the continent. And trust us when we say they’re “old school” cool. You’ll see everything from vintage camo patterns, classic pickup trucks, retro hairstyles, hunting bows and guns from yesteryear . . . and of course, big whitetail bucks!
This week we rewind the clock and steer the time machine way up north to Canada. You can’t help but admire these rich, color photos of three monster bucks, two of which were taken in Saskatchewan, and the other, Alberta. Personally, I’m as drawn to the sheer size of these stud buck’s antlers as I am the raw, wild countryside that’s visible in the background. I spy snow-covered conifers, white-barked aspens and rolling canola grain fields…
The Mark Peeples Buck (Photo courtesy of Mark Peeples) Taken November 11, 1996, near Sundre, Alberta, the Mark A. Peeples buck is a 12-pointer, with 6-points on each side. The buck’s rack measures 20 inches inside, with main beams measuring 26 1/8 (right) and 25 5/8 (left). Seven of the eight mass measurements are more than 5 inches, with the largest tallying 7 7/8 inches. The official entry score was 194 2/8 gross and 189 5/8 net Boone & Crockett. Though we haven’t confirmed if B&C accepted the score (due to a scoring discrepancy of the G-2 and G-3 tines) it’s believed the buck would net B&C as a 4x4.
Canola Field Buck (Photo courtesy of Paul Chamblee) With a net Boone & Crockett score of 174 4/8 points, Paul Chamblee’s Saskatchewan buck is a great trophy. Paul and many of his friends from North Carolina have been making the trip north to Canada for more than a decade now, and deer such as this keep them coming back!
Road Trip North (Photo courtesy of Roger Matheny) Roger Matheny lives in Dearborn Heights, Michigan, but hunts whitetails from one end of North America to the other. He bagged this tremendous typical, with a gross score of 184 points and net of 173, on a hunt in Saskatchewan.
