Whitetail Time Machine is a glimpse back into the glory days of trophy deer hunting, as seen through the eyes and camera lenses of North American Whitetail readers. Once a week for the remainder of 2024, our edit staff is publishing photos sent to us by fans and followers. These are photos that were mailed to us in the 1980s and 90s, all of which we found stowed away in a huge box that’d been tucked in a corner of our office in Kennesaw, Georgia, prior to its closing.
These photos came to us from hunters across the continent. And trust us when we say they’re “old school” cool. You’ll see everything from vintage camo patterns, classic pickup trucks, retro hairstyles, hunting bows and guns from yesteryear… and of course, big whitetail bucks!
This week, it’s all about Muriel Keall, a lady hunter from Ontario who downed an absolute monster of a buck way back in 1960. This photo of her with the taxidermy mount appeared in the September 1994 issue of NAW, in that issues’ Hall of Fame department. Even today there’s still not a huge demographic of female deer hunters, but I’m sure the numbers were far fewer back then. Thankfully, women like Muriel helped pave the way for our current generation of whitetailers. Check it out!
She’s Got a Gun Muriel Keall bagged the buck of a lifetime when she dropped this 175 1/8-inch non-typical in the Nippissing district of Ontario way back in 1960. Still-hunting did the trick on this impressive trophy.
