Step with me into the Whitetail Time Machine , and let’s travel back to the good ole days of deer hunting! Once a week for the remainder of 2024, our edit staff is publishing photos sent to us by fans and followers. These are photos that were mailed to us in the 1980s and 90s, all of which we found stowed away in a huge box that’d been tucked in a corner of our office in Kennesaw, Georgia, prior to its closing.
These photos came to us from hunters across the continent. And trust us when we say they’re “old school” cool. You’ll see everything from vintage camo patterns, classic pickup trucks, retro hairstyles, hunting bows and guns from yesteryear . . . and of course, big whitetail bucks!
This week’s installment features a truly magnificent trophy whitetail from Kansas, taken by bow back in 1999. It’s exactly the kind of giant buck that made Kansas a popular destination when the state opened its door up to non-resident hunters just a few years prior. Even today, it’s among the world’s most well-known and beloved whitetail states.
The Right Deer Trail (Photo courtesy of Dana Hamby) Hunting a travel corridor during the Kansas rut, Dana Hamby found himself looking down his arrow at an incredible non-typical. The buck came running toward Dana at 10 a.m. and gave him a 10-yard broadside shot! The broadhead took out one lung, and the deer ran just 60 yards before falling. At 200 Pope & Young points, this was Kansas’s top bow kill of the year!
