Step with me into the Whitetail Time Machine , and let’s travel back to the good ole days of deer hunting! Once a week for the remainder of 2024, our edit staff is publishing photos sent to us by fans and followers. These are photos that were mailed to us in the 1980s and 90s, all of which we found stowed away in a huge box that’d been tucked in a corner of our office in Kennesaw, Georgia, prior to its closing.
These photos came to us from hunters across the continent. And trust us when we say they’re “old school” cool. You’ll see everything from vintage camo patterns, classic pickup trucks, retro hairstyles, hunting bows and guns from yesteryear . . . and of course, big whitetail bucks!
Who doesn’t get excited about a trip to the taxidermist? There’s nothing better than finally getting to pick up your trophy buck mount after months of waiting for it to be completed. This months’ Whitetail Time Machine post is dedicated to some awesome, vintage buck mounts, and their respective owners, who surely didn’t miss an opportunity to pose with their prize!
Let’s bring back the classic grip-n’-grin shoulder mount pose, shall we? Extra points for photos taken in the backyard, while wearing full camo, or with the mount secured to your home’s exterior!
Last Minute in Alberta (Photo courtesy of Tim Sizemore) Does Tim Sizemore like guided hunts? Judging from his smile as he holds up this Alberta buck, apparently so! Tim traveled from Greenville, South Carolina, to St. Paul, Alberta, for a hunt in mid-November 1989 and took this great 6x4, with a gross Boone & Crockett score of 171 5/8 points. The buck walked out in the last few minutes of shooting light on the last afternoon of the hunt!
Montana Monster (Photo courtesy of Duane Rhodes) November 26 was the date and northwestern Montana was the place for Libby resident Duane Rhodes, as he downed this super 8-pointer. The buck is 22 1/8 inches inside and scores 150 2/8 points.
Body Builder Buck (Photo courtesy of Elden Graham) Elden Graham bagged this long-tined 8-pointer on the third day of firearms season near the hunter’s home in Bloomingdale, Michigan. The bruiser buck weighed 250 pounds on the hoof, Elden says.
