Step with me into the Whitetail Time Machine , and let’s travel back to the good ole days of deer hunting! Once a week for the remainder of 2024, the North American Whitetail edit staff is excited to publish a new batch of photos submitted by fans and readers of the magazine throughout the 1980s and 90s, all of which we found stowed away in a huge box that’d been tucked in a corner of our office in Kennesaw, Georgia, prior to its closing.
These photos came to us from hunters across the continent. And trust us when we say they’re “old school” cool. You’ll see everything from vintage camo patterns, classic pickup trucks, retro hairstyles, hunting bows and guns from yesteryear . . . and of course, big whitetail bucks!
To kick things off, this week’s montage is comprised entirely of trophy deer from the great state of Wisconsin! The captions below are exactly what was written in the letters that accompanied the photo submission. Check ‘em out!
That’s No Cull Buck! “Steve Cull of Monches, WI, arrowed this monster 9-pointer while bowhunting on November 12, 1987, from a treestand at 15 yards. The buck field dressed at 182 pounds with an inside spread of 20 inches and an official Pope and Young score of 138 6/8 points. This elusive whitetailed gray-faced swamp buck was shot in Waukesha Co., Wisconsin.”

The deer field dressed 206 pounds, has 11 points, and an 18 2/8-inch inside spread. With 5 7/8- and 6 2/8-inch bases, he scores 153 even Pope and Young (gross). Tactic used: The deer was sparring with another large buck. After the two broke up, I used a grunt call to bring him into range.”
