Call it beginner's luck, but for 16-year-old Cody Detwiler his first ever bowkill was also his biggest buck ever.
During his first season bowhunting, Detwiler hunted hard all season without any luck. On Nov. 5 he set up on a pinch point between a swamp and field after receiving permission to hunt from the last person available to ask.
Just before dark, a crunching noise coming from behind his stand drew Detwiler's attention. Grabbing his Bowtech Diamond Nitrous and drawing on the spot he had ranged at 20 yards, Detwiler knew it was a shooter as soon as he saw the rack. But the buck was moving too fast, causing Detwiler to pivot and try again.
Overcoming his nerves, Detwiler let his arrow loaded with a G5 Striker broadhead fly and hit the buck slightly back as the arrow completely passed through. The buck went about 50 yards before expiring.
Detwiler called his father in a fit of excitement when he saw the buck disappear. After waiting two hours Detwiler returned with his father to pick up the blood trail. Upon approaching the downed buck Detwiler realized that this buck was at least twice as big as he thought when he took the shot.
With 12-scorable points and a green score of 150 inches, Detwiler was understandably proud of his accomplishment.
