Three years is a long time to wait for the opportunity at a dream buck. But as any whitetail hunter will tell you, it's all worth it when there's success at the end.
Avid Iowa bowhunter Rick Halverson finally connected on a giant 205-inch Iowa buck he named "Droppy" last season after years of passing buck after buck, holding out for this particular droptine giant since first seeing it in 2010.
As the 2013 season rolled around, Droppy made his way back to Halverson's hunting ground just in time for the rut. On Nov. 8 Halverson setup in a big oak tree near the area he'd seen first spotted Droppy on his trail camera in 2011.
The brisk 28-degree day was without wind, making the spot perfect for Halverson. Just as the sun cleared the treetops, Halverson looked toward the south and spotted two does headed his way. As the does neared he saw the giant rack following close behind.
The does led the giant to within 25 yards before Halverson released his Carbon Express arrow tipped with a Muzzy broadhead. Everything about the shot suggested that it was a perfect hit. However, after gathering himself, Halverson was unable to locate the downed buck when he attempted to track it.
Unfortunately for Halverson, the season ended without locating Droppy. Finally, in March, Halverson's hunting buddy, Billy See, called to inform him he had located Droppy while out shed hunting. With the help of the Iowa DNR, Halverson recovered his giant buck and finished his three-year quest with the satisfaction of success, even if it wasn't the way he planned it.
