This Big Kansas Buck Shifted Two Miles Throughout the Season

Blake Garrett had kept an eye on this big 8-point going into the 2023-24 hunting season. Ultimately, after the buck had shifted two miles twice during the year, Blake arrowed the deer at just 22 yards.

Like many hunters, Blake Garrett travels quite a bit during deer season. Living in Missouri, he commonly hunts other states, too. One of the other states he frequents is Kansas, and that’s where he killed the buck this story focuses on. Garrett first saw the deer via trail camera late last fall.

“This summer lots of rain pushed our deer around out there a little bit,” Blake says. “We started getting photos of him two miles from where we had been seeing him before, so we started running feed on him to try to get more photos of him. This deer really had no problem daylighting, giving us plenty of photos during the day.”

Blake had a buddy coming in to hunt during the early muzzleloader season in September, and he planned to put his friend on the deer. As luck would have it, the buck never showed up. Like big bucks do, he started showing up later on the bait pile.

In order to get on him with the prevailing winds, Blake had to move his blind to a location where he wouldn’t get winded. Sure enough, the deer showed up when Blake was hunting him. He stepped out at 180 yards, but he knew something was up when he got to about 60 yards.

“He noticed the blind was moved or something,” Blake explains. “That ended that hunt for him.”

He showed up on camera the next night, so Blake didn’t think he was spooked too bad. However, the next two days of hunting resulted in the deer being a no-show. Blake had to get back home, so it would be a few days before he could go after the deer again. And when he did, the deer had moved two miles from he had been before, into an area the deer had previously used. So, Blake set up there on his next trip to the property. That ended up being the ticket; the buck stepped out and Blake shot him at 22 yards!

This mainframe 8-pointer has an impressive, clean rack. What’s more, Blake arrowed a 160-inch 8-pointer last year, too. He’s definitely got a thing for big 8-points!
