West Virginia Man Carves Amazing Buck out of Pine

Not quite a “saw dog”, but pretty damn close. West Virginia native Terry Phillips obviously discovered a hidden talent when he decided to see if he could take scraps of pine leftover from a hunting log cabin he was helping build, and turn them into a masterpiece that’s worthy of hanging next to any mount. And what’s even more amazing is that this was Terry’s first time carving anything! Working off and on, the project lasted about six months. His wife Mary sent us a few pictures of the process that we’re sharing here! Enjoy!

Whatever this man has been doing for the rest of his life, wasn't really his "calling". His gift is artistic, but you have to mention his mechanical skills too. After all, he didn't just sculpt it, first he had to build it's basic form from wood scraps.

  • Bill Gordon

I was a professional woodworker for 30 years. Although I specialized in lathe work and made a respectable living at it selling my products at arts and crafts conventions throughout the USA. I had customers from Canada, England, Germany and Japan. Mr Phillips, you have an exceptional talent. I yield to you. Thank you for sharing it with us.

  • Tom Dean

I know exactly how Terry feels!!! I had no carving, carpentre, wood working skills AT ALL my entire life until the age of 45!! I started to carve trout out of exotic woods just 3 1/2 years ago and have been extremely blessed to have turned it into an obsession and a full time occupation!!! I don't know you Terry, but sincere congratulations!!! It is our GOD given talent that we are able to do what we are blessed to do!! Check out http://www.milocreekcarvings.com and see what I am, like Terry, so very fortunate to do in life!!!

  • Douglas W right

Dude… all I can say is, If you carve it, they will come. Way to go.

  • Mel Heath

I wonder if he might like to do a moose? A friends boy shot a nice bull moose with a spread over 60+" many points. He was having it mounted when the taxidermist's studio burns–all is lost. Friend is looking to replace it.
Please contact Mel Heath, Poland, Maine 04274 email mpheath@fairpoint.net

he nature of the wood being carved limits the scope of the carver in that wood is not equally strong in all directions: it is an anisotropic material. The direction in which wood is strongest is called "grain" (grain may be straight, interlocked, wavy or fiddleback, etc.). It is smart to arrange the more delicate parts of a design along the grain instead of across it, and the more slender stalks or leaf-points should not be too much separated from their adjacent surroundings. -Dan Sciscente
